About Kim's Singapore Bistro

Kims-third-generation.jpeg

The beginning of Kim’s Place started in 1960 at Jalan Kayu, where Mr Tan Kue Kim mastered the fine art of frying Singapore-style Hokkien Mee under the watchful eye of his cousin. Five years later, Mr Tan set up his own stall, and in 1971, he moved to Changi Road.

At Changi Road, Mr Tan’s Hokkien Mee came to be known across Singapore as the “Rolex Hokkien Mee”. Why was this the case, you may ask? This was because Mr Tan would be seen daily frying up his tasty and flavourful Hokkien Mee wearing the same attire – a long sleeve shirt and his signature Rolex watch. Many would travel from all corners of Singapore to savour Mr Tan’s Rolex Hokkien Mee!

In 1984, Mr Tan then went on to establish his very own Eating House at Joo Chiat. There, Mr Tan revolutionalised his business by introducing other tasty dishes such as Sambal Kang Kong, Black Pepper Crab in Hotpot, Claypot Abalone Hokkien Mee, Fish Maw Soup, Spicy Bean Sauce Steamed Tilapia and a host of other delectable items which have now become Kim’s Signatures.

In 1988, Mr Tan’s son, Mr Tan Hock Yong, joined in the business and worked to carry on his father’s legacy. In 1996, Mr Tan Junior set up the first Kim’s Place at Kampong Kembangan serving his family’s signature Hokkien Mee with other delicious dishes.

In 2003, Kim’s Place moved from Kampong Kembangan to Joo Chiat Place. There, Mr Tan Junior innovated new dishes, such as Crab Fried with Fermented Beancurd. Cheese Lobsters, Cheese Crabs and XO (Extra Oyster) Hokkien Mee, which retains the original flavour of the Hokkien Mee, while spicing it up with the addition of fresh oysters.

In 2010, Mr Tan Junior upgraded Kim’s Place by moving it to an air-conditioned and larger location within Joo Chiat Place. There, Kim’s Place has tantalised the tastebuds of its faithful customers for more than 12 years.

Kim's Singapore Bistro is born out of this lasting legacy. Here at Kim's Singapore Bistro, we strive to give you the authentic flavours of Kim’s Hokkien Mee with its Signature Dishes, to be enjoyed right in the heart of Central Singapore.

Bon Appetite! (Or as we would say in Hokkien – Ho Jiak!)
